Credit Card EMIs: Understanding GST, Fees & Hidden Costs

Credit card EMI conversions come with upfront fees, monthly interest, and a mandatory 18% GST on all charges. Here is the math.

Converting high credit card bills into Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) is often marketed as a cost-effective way to manage debt. However, credit card EMIs involve multiple hidden elements, particularly Goods and Services Tax (GST).

1. Upfront Processing Fees

Most banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, etc.) charge an upfront processing fee for converting credit card balances to EMIs. This fee usually ranges from 1% to 2.5% of the transaction amount, or a flat fee of ₹99 to ₹199.

2. The 18% GST Hit

In India, banking and financial services are subject to an 18% GST. This means an 18% tax is applied directly to:

  • The upfront processing fee.
  • The interest component of every single monthly EMI.

3. Detailed Example calculation

Suppose you convert a purchase of ₹50,000 to a 12-month EMI at 15% annual interest with a 1% processing fee:

• Standard Monthly EMI: ₹4,513

• Upfront Processing Fee: ₹500 + 18% GST (₹90) = ₹590

• Month 1 Interest: ₹625 (₹50,000 × 15% / 12) + 18% GST (₹112.50) = ₹737.50

• Month 12 Interest: ₹55 + 18% GST (₹9.90) = ₹64.90

• Total Interest Paid: ₹4,155

• Total GST Paid on Interest: ₹748

• Actual Out-of-Pocket Expense: ₹50,000 (principal) + ₹4,155 (interest) + ₹748 (GST) + ₹590 (fee) = ₹55,493

Note on No-Cost EMI: Even for 'No-Cost EMI' offers where the interest is given as an upfront discount, you must still pay the 18% GST on the interest calculated month-on-month by the bank. Thus, a 'No-Cost' EMI is never truly zero-cost.

4. How the Tenure and Rate Change the Cost

On the same ₹50,000 purchase, the interest you pay (before GST and fees) varies as follows:

Rate & Tenure Monthly EMI Total Interest
14% for 12 months ₹4,489 ₹3,872
16% for 12 months ₹4,537 ₹4,439
15% for 6 months ₹8,702 ₹2,210

Add 18% GST to each interest figure and the processing fee (with its own GST) to get the true cost. Choosing the shortest tenure you can comfortably afford is the single biggest lever you have.

5. Foreclosure and Other Charges to Check

  • Pre-closure fee: Many issuers charge 2% to 4% of the outstanding principal plus GST if you close the EMI early.
  • Credit limit blocking: The full converted amount usually reduces your available credit limit until the EMIs are repaid, which can affect your credit utilisation ratio.
  • Missed payments: A missed EMI attracts late fees and can leave the remaining balance exposed to the card's much higher revolving interest rate.

6. Cheaper Alternatives

Before converting a large bill, compare it with a small personal loan from a bank where you hold an account, a loan against a fixed deposit or other security, or paying the bill in full from savings and refilling the savings over a few months. A personal loan at 11% to 13% reducing can be cheaper than a card EMI at 15% plus fees and GST. Use the Personal Loan and Credit Card tabs on our calculator to compare the total payable in each case.
